The dry port of Zaragoza grows in times of negative numbers

A Dry Port is a freight terminal located in the interior of an economic region or country that connects, through the rail network, with the sea port of origin or destination of the treated traffic.

The Zaragoza Maritime Terminal, operated by tmZ Services, has maintained growth figures despite the added complexity caused by the Covid-19 health crisis and continues “as a leader in inland intermodal terminals, both in terms of activity and capacity of containers, “according to a statement from this dry port.

This achievement of increased traffic in a time where negative numbers predominate, is demonstrated in figures: tmZ has moved 155,625 containers in the first half of the year, which represents an increase of 4% compared to the same period of 2019.

The interannual data at the end of the first semester show an increase of 11% in trains operated by Terminal Marítima de Zaragoza, reaching 1,361 and 5% in the number of rail movements, which reached 72,331 at the end of June. The specialization achieved in the agri-food sector has allowed the logistics infrastructure to increase exports, especially through reefer containers, thus cushioning the fall in imports caused by the drop in domestic consumption.

The high resilience capacity of tmZ, both in terms of connectivity and adaptation to the measures derived from the health crisis, has been key to obtaining these results. Regarding connectivity, it should be noted that from the first quarter the terminal was able to adapt to the cut of the line that connects it with the port of Barcelona through the North branch of Lleida, due to the Dana storm. Regarding the measures derived from the health crisis, the company highlights the strong commitment and professionalism shown by the human team of both tmZ Services, as well as its entire intermodal logistics community, whether they are operators, railway companies, carriers or Adif staff. Arrabal, thanks to which, they indicate, “a safe service has been guaranteed at all times, always rigorously maintaining the health protection and safety standards.”

On the other hand, the operator, tmZ Services, in which the multinationals APM Terminals (Maersk) and Hutchison Ports participate, in addition to the property company tmZ itself, is completing the paving works of a new area of 16,000 m2 with a close investment to the million euros that will be operational this summer, mainly destined to container storage and expansion of the reefer area.
