WS series

Family: Synthetic Metal Sulfides
Application: Additives for greases and polymers

The WS series comprises solid lubricant additives for a wide range of applications, including coatings, polymers, and Constant Velocity Joint (CVJ) use. Its main strength lies in providing significant improvement in wear, especially under demanding conditions characterized by high temperatures and heavy loads.

Frequently asked questions

What is the WS series and what is its main function in a lubricating grease?

The WS series is our additive line based on ultra-high purity synthetic Tungsten Disulfide (WS2). Its main function is to act as a solid lubricant under the most extreme conditions, offering the lowest possible coefficient of friction and superior thermal stability compared to any other metal sulfide, including Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2).

When should a formulator choose the WS series over MoS2 or the WL series?

The WS series is the ultimate solution for the most severe operating conditions. It should be chosen over other options in the following cases:

  • Ultra-High-Temperature Applications: In environments where operating temperatures exceed 350°C (662°F) in air, the point at which $MoS_2$ begins to oxidize and lose its lubricating properties. $WS_2$ is stable up to 500°C (932°F).
  • Vacuum Applications: Unlike other solid lubricants such as graphite, $WS_2$ does not require moisture to function, making it ideal for aerospace applications or high-vacuum equipment.
  • Critical Friction Reduction: When the primary goal is to minimize energy losses due to friction to the greatest extent possible.

How does the performance of the WS series compare to graphite at high temperatures?

While both are excellent high-temperature lubricants, the WS series (Tungsten Disulfide) offers key advantages. WS2 has an intrinsically lower coefficient of friction than graphite (typically 0.03 vs 0.08 under optimal conditions). Furthermore, graphite can be abrasive under certain conditions and requires the presence of water vapor for effective lubricity, limiting its use in dry or vacuum environments where WS2 excels.

What is the recommended treat rate for the WS series?

Due to its high efficiency as a friction reducer, significant benefits can be observed at lower treat rates than other solids. We recommend starting evaluations in the range of 1% to 3% by weight. For applications combining extreme temperature and high load, the dosage can be increased up to 5%.

Is the WS series compatible with different types of thickeners and base oils?

Yes. Like other solid lubricants in our range, Tungsten Disulfide is a chemically inert material. This ensures full compatibility with the vast majority of grease formulations, regardless of the thickener type (lithium complex, calcium sulfonate, polyurea, etc.) or the nature of the base oil (mineral or synthetic). Its incorporation process is identical to that of other powder additives.
