r smart

Family: Thin Metal fibers for UHPC
Application: Structural concrete with fibres

It is a brass coated steel fibre, suitable for a wide range of applications with exceptional performance in: pavements, shotcrete (tunnels, slopes), non-cementitious matrices, special concretes, UHPCs and in low thickness precast. The very high tensile strength of the steel used prevents the occurrence of creep deformation. It provides very high residual strength at low dosages. It is available in various lengths allowing it to be used in a variety of applications.

Frequently asked questions

What is r-smart fiber?

r-smart is a straight, brass-coated, ultra-high-performance steel microfiber. It is designed to provide exceptional reinforcement in concrete at very low dosages, excelling particularly in thin-section elements.

What are the main applications for r-smart?

Its design makes it ideal for:

  • Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC): Where it is a key component to achieve ductile matrices with extraordinary strengths.
  • Thin precast elements: GRC-like architectural panels, urban furniture, or any piece requiring high strength in thin sections.
  • Pavements and slabs with special requirements: Where superior crack control is needed with minimal dosages.
  • Technical and repair mortars: To improve cohesion and impact resistance.

Shotcrete: To obtain thin, high-performance reinforcement layers

What is the main advantage of r-smart fiber?

Its key advantage is efficiency: it achieves very high mechanical performance with significantly lower dosages than conventional steel fibers. This is due to its extremely high tensile strength (min. 2,400 MPa / 348 ksi) and its optimized geometry (high aspect ratio).

Why is it coated with brass?

The brass coating serves a dual purpose:

  1. Protection: It provides a barrier against corrosion during storage and mixing.
  2. Improved Bond: It enhances chemical compatibility and bond with the cement matrix, ensuring effective stress transfer.

What makes it different from conventional hooked-end steel fibers?

  • Dosage: r-smart achieves equivalent or superior residual strengths with much fewer kilograms (or pounds) per cubic meter (or cubic yard).
  • Dispersion: Being a microfiber, it distributes extremely homogeneously, even in concrete with fine aggregates or in elements with complex geometries, without the risk of clumping or "hedgehog" formation.
  • Finish: It is virtually invisible on the finished surface, which is crucial for architectural applications.

Is r-smart considered a structural fiber?

Absolutely. Despite its small size, its ultra-high mechanical strength allows it to impart significant post-crack residual strength to the concrete, meeting the requirements to be considered a structural reinforcement according to the EN 14889-1 (Group 1) standard.

How does it affect the workability of concrete?

Due to the low required dosages, the impact on the mix's workability is minimal. Concrete reinforced with r-smart maintains good consistency and is easily pumpable, provided a proper mix design is used.

What standards does r-smart fiber comply with?

r-smart fiber is manufactured according to the highest quality standards and complies with the following international regulations:

  • EN 14889-1:2006: For steel fibers for concrete, classified as Group 1 (cold-drawn wire).
  • ASTM A820/A820M-06: Standard Specification for Steel Fibers for Fiber-Reinforced Concrete, classified as Type I.
