r gun

Family: Polymeric macro Fibers
Application: Structural concrete with fibres

r gun is the specialised fibre for tunnels, but due to its geometry and characteristics it is also used in pavements. Its reduced diameter and surface texture generates an effective 3D reinforcement against crack opening. Thanks to its chemical resistance, it can be used in environments in contact with seawater and mines with minerals and gases that can degrade traditional reinforcing steel. As it has a lower specific weight than steel, it requires much lower dosages and is therefore much easier to handle and transport.

Advantages

  • High energy absorption (>900 J).
  • Replaces structural mesh in pavements and tunnels.
  • Reduces the time required to install the mesh..
  • Flexible, reduces wear on pumps and pipes.
  • No corrosion, less rebound and safe handling.

Frequently asked questions

What is the r-gun fiber family and what is it designed for?

The r-gun family comprises a range of high-performance polymeric (polypropylene) macrofibers, specifically engineered and optimized for use in shotcrete (gunite). Their geometry is conceived to maximize mechanical anchorage and the efficiency of the spraying process, providing three-dimensional structural reinforcement and reducing rebound.

What is the difference between r-gun 54 and r-gun 48?

The key difference is their length (54 mm vs 48 mm), which allows for optimizing the solution based on project priorities:

  • r-gun 54: Being longer, it offers superior anchorage and therefore higher performance in terms of residual strength. It is the ideal choice when maximum structural performance is sought.
  • r-gun 48: It is slightly shorter to improve processability and pumpability in more complex concrete mixes or with more sensitive spraying equipment, while still offering excellent structural reinforcement.

The choice depends on the desired balance between maximum performance and ease of application.

What is the main advantage of using the r-gun family instead of wire mesh in shotcrete?

The advantages are substantial in terms of safety, durability, speed, and performance:

  • Zero Corrosion: Being 100% polypropylene, they are completely immune to rust and chemical attacks, ensuring maximum durability in aggressive environments.
  • Safety and Speed: It eliminates the need to install wire mesh, drastically reducing occupational hazards and execution times.
  • Homogeneous Reinforcement: It provides uniform, three-dimensional reinforcement throughout the entire concrete mass.
  • Extremely Lightweight: It facilitates logistics and reduces wear on pumping equipment.
  • Reduced Rebound: Its design binds the mix together, decreasing the amount of material lost to rebound, which translates into direct savings.

Do r-gun fibers provide structural capacity?

Yes. They are structural macrofibers (Class II according to EN 14889-2) designed to absorb energy and provide ductility to concrete after cracking. Through engineering design, they can completely replace traditional wire mesh as the primary reinforcement in support applications, achieving the required residual strengths.

In what type of projects is the r-gun family primarily used?

It is ideal for any shotcrete application, especially in aggressive environments:

  • Tunnel and mine support, particularly in the final lining layer.
  • Slope and embankment stabilization, especially in marine or chemical environments.
  • Structural repair and retrofitting.
  • Construction of pools, channels, and reservoirs.

Does using r-gun fibers cause increased wear on spraying equipment?

No, quite the opposite. As lightweight and flexible polymeric fibers, the wear they cause on hoses and nozzles is virtually nil, a significant advantage over steel fibers. The dosages (typically between 3 and 7 kg/m³ or 5-12 lb/yd³) are easily handled by the equipment.

How are r-gun fibers added to the concrete?

They are added directly at the batching plant or into the concrete mixer truck. Their light weight facilitates a very fast and homogeneous three-dimensional dispersion with a short mixing time at high speed, preventing clumping ("hedgehogs").

What benefits does polypropylene offer in shotcrete regarding corrosion?

The benefit is absolute. Being made of polypropylene, r-gun fibers will never rust. This completely eliminates any risk of corrosion, even if a fiber is exposed on the surface. This feature makes them ideal for structures with a long design life or those exposed to weather, water, or chemical agents.
